¡Bienvenido Mr. Marshall! Inesperado día de fiesta en la escuela
El 10 de Enero se celebraba en los países islámicos el nuevo ano musulmán. En nochevieja nosotros entramos en el 2008 después de Cristo, ellos en el ano 1429. La razón es que empiezan a contar después del traslado de La Meca a Medina de Mahoma y la primera comunidad de musulmanes -hecho conocido como “Hégira”- que ocurrió en el 622 de la era cristiana.
Como el calendario que siguen es lunar cada ano es 11 o 12 días más corto que el nuestro –gregoriano-, así que su “nochevieja” varía. Celebrarán la llegada del 1430 el 29 de Diciembre de 2008.
En cualquier caso lo importante es que tuvimos fiesta, y al ser jueves se convirtió en un fin de semana de tres días. Después de lo cual se presentaba un panorama duro, ya que no tenemos vacaciones hasta “San José” allá por Marzo. Sin embargo los avatares del destino han hecho que tengamos hoy un inesperado día de asueto.
El presidente estadounidense se encuentra por estos lares, dentro de una gira por los países del golfo. Ayer estuvo en Abu Dhabi y hoy está en Dubai. Ayer asistimos a clase como todos los domingos y el día transcurrió sin novedad. Después fui a nadar y al llegar a casa me encontré con este mensaje en el móvil, remitido por el superintendente de la escuela: “NO SCHOOL TOMORROW – MONDAY JAN 14th. PUBLIC HOLIDAY. SUPERINTENDENT”. Vamos, que habían declarado fiesta para el día siguiente en las instituciones públicas y escuelas. La razón: que debido a la visita de Bush van a cortar la mayoría de las calles principales, el tráfico va a ser un cristo y se van a montar unos atascos del copón en las rutas alternativas. Y para reducir el follón han decidido que los escolares se queden en casa, minimizando este impacto. De lujo, un inesperado día de fiesta gracias al presidente Bush.
La verdad es que no me alegra nada que esté por aquí. Hoy los periódicos locales resaltan esta frase de su encuentro ayer con el presidente Emiratí el jeque Khalifa Bin Zayed: “Bush stresses Iranian threat” – “Bush recalca la amenaza de Irán”. ¿Viene a buscar aliados para una posible acción militar? Esperemos que no.
¿Qué os ha parecido el sistema automático del que dispone la escuela para avisar? Tienen introducidos los móviles de todos los profesores en un sistema informático, y si tienen que hacer algún anuncio inesperado simplemente ejecutan el programa que envía un SMS a todos los docentes, y desde donde estemos nos damos por enterados.
Me he permitido enviar este viejo chiste hoy a mis colegas de la escuela. Espero que ningún estadounidense se rebote. Lo he adaptado a las peculiaridades del entorno ;-)

After the official visit of President Bush to Dubai, Aitor “Homer” Rey met him at Barasti. As you know they are good friends because Homer is a well-known republican and financed Bush’s campaign with a lot of euros. So after a couple of pints Homer invited him to come to his Ab Initio class the following day, to talk about the importance of learning Spanish specially in the USA, and more important, in towns like Amarillo located in states that border with Mexico.
After his little speech it was time for students’ questions, comments or concerns –they were in Spanish but I translate them into English-.
The first one talking was Colin, a Canadian student with revolutionary ideas and an active member of the Model United Nations Club.
- Welcome to Dubai, Mr. President. I would like to formulate three questions:
1.- Why because of your visit to Dubai the school was closed yesterday, being denied our right to education on a regular day?
2.- Last year we watched the movie “An Inconvenient Truth” by Al Gore. Why the USA, the largest single emitter of carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels, signed Kyoto Protocol but declined ratification of the treaty?
And third…
3.- The USA was the first country in the world to successfully develop nuclear weapons and is the only country to have used them in war against another nation. With 189 countries taking part in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, it is one of the five recognized nuclear powers along with UK, France, Russia and China. Your visit to the Middle East is in any way related with the conflict with our neighboring Iran?

At that point the bell rang and one of the bodyguards with a headphone in his ear says… “OK kids, it is time for lunch. We will continue with the questions later, alright?”.
Students went to the cafeteria and came back after 25 minutes. Mr. President Bush said… “OK guys, you were asking questions before lunch. Let’s continue with that. Anybody?”.
Cole, and Australian student raised his hand and said:
