Students travel across Europe during spring break

Spring break is a time for the celebration of a new season, relaxation from stress and work, and most obvious at SAS, a time to travel the globe. Along with Habitat trips all over Asia, this spring holiday SAS sent students to Spain, France, and Switzerland.
Twenty freshmen and juniors jetted off to Spain with trip leaders Spanish teacher Señor Javier Castro and China Alive coordinator Ms. Yvonne Zhu.
Their trip consisted of a quick two-day visit in Madrid to catch the beauty of the city and activities that included shopping, sightseeing, and bullfighting, with freshman Kiah Love-Latzke said was ¨a really cool experience to see, but I found the way they killed the bulls quite cruel and doubt I would go again!¨
After exploring Madrid for 48 hours, the team moved on to Sarria, Spain, to start their pilgrimage walk. There they met up with a group of 23 Spanish students who would be walking with them. Love-Latzke reported that ¨they were all really nice and friendly right away when we met them, and throughout the trip we got to know them better and helped them with their English, trying to keep up with them in Spanish as well.¨
The team walked 100km. (62 miles) in total over five days, spending each night in a hostel, which ¨really added to the Spanish culture aspect experience of the trip¨, according to Love-Latzke.
With a beautiful Spanish backdrop following them everywhere, the team walked the majority of every day with a few rests in between. Love-Latzke said, ¨The time passed by fast with the scenery and the Spanish people to walk with and get to know.¨ Many students ended up with blisters and sunburns due to the long walks and sunny weather.
The last day of walking started with the team 20 kilometers (12 miles) from their final destination, but it also gave them a major road block: rain.
The only landmark they could see was a huge cathedral in the distance. Love-Latzke explained, ¨As we were finishing our last kilometer (before reaching) the cathedral, it started pouring rain, but that didn´t stop us. The whole group ran to the cathedral, and we started hugging and cheering in the middle of the square, not caring about the rain or who was looking at us.¨

ESTUDIANTES VIAJAN POR EUROPA DURANTE LAS VACACIONES DE PRIMAVERA

Las vacaciones de primavera es un tiempo para celebrar la nueva estación, relajarse del estrés y del trabajo, y más obvio en la Escuela Americana de Shanghái (EAS), un tiempo para viajar por el mundo. Aparte de con los viajes de ¨Habitat para la Humanidad¨ en Asia, en estas vacaciones de primavera la EAS ha enviado estudiantes a España, Francia y Suiza.
Veinte estudiantes de grado 9 y 11 volaron a España con los monitores Señor Javier Castro –profesor de español- y Srta. Yvonne Zhu –coordinadora del programa China Alive-.
Su viaje consistió en una visita rápida de dos días a Madrid para disfrutar de la belleza de la ciudad con actividades que incluían ir de compras, hacer turismo y una corrida de toros, de la que la estudiante de grado 9 Kiah Love-Latzke dijo que ¨fue una buena experiencia para ver, pero encuentro la manera en que matan a los toros bastante cruel y dudo que vaya otra vez¨.
Después de explorar Madrid durante 48 horas, el equipo se transladó a Sarria, España, para empezar el peregrinaje a pie. Allá se encontraron con un grupo de 23 estudiantes españoles que harían El Camino con ellos. Love-Latzke informó que ¨todos ellos eran muy simpáticos y abiertos desde el momento en que nos juntamos, y durante el viaje los conocimos mejor y les ayudamos con su inglés mientras nosotros tratábamos de practicar español también.¨
El equipo caminó 100 kilómetros (62 millas) en un total de cinco días, pasando cada noche en un albergue, lo que ¨verdaderamente fue positivo para la experiencia cultural del viaje¨, según Love-Latzke.
Con un bonito paisaje de España de fondo el equipo caminaba la mayor parte del día, con algunos descansos en medio. Love-Latzke dijo ¨el tiempo pasó muy rápido disfrutando del paisaje y de la compañía de los españoles con los que caminamos y conocimos.¨ Muchos estudiantes terminaron con ampollas y quemaduras por el sol debido a las largas caminatas y al calor.
El último día de camino empezó con el equipo a 20 kilómetros (12 miles) del destino final, pero se encontraron un gran obstaculo en la ruta: la lluvia.
El único hito que podían ver era una enorme catedral en la distancia. Love-Latzke explicó, ¨a medida que acabábamos nuestros últimos kilómetros, empezó a llover a cántaros, pero eso no nos paró. Todo el grupo corrió hacia la catedral, y empezamos a abrazarnos y a animar en medio de la plaza, sin importarnos la lluvia o quien nos estuviera viendo.¨
