Viaje a España Diario escrito por los estudiantes
En los últimos viajes les estoy haciendo a los estudiantes que escriban un diario. Un par de noches, cada uno de los 20 tiene la responsabilidad de documentar lo que ha pasado. No es mucho esfuerzo para ellos, solo tienen que escribir dos veces, y al final queda un recuerdo bonito como este diario de casi 60 páginas que podéis leer –en inglés- en ese enlace.

Cerrando el diario…
Antes de despegar de Shanghai este viaje ya era especial para mi por varias razones.
- Había hecho ¨El Camino¨ anteriormente, y es una de las mejores experiencias de mi vida.
- Me encontraría con dos amigos –Ana y Carlos- a los que no había visto en 9 años, desde que trabajamos juntos en Carolina del Sur.
- He viajado con estudiantes a España los dos años anteriores, pero definitivamente este era un viaje más exigente.
Aterrizando en Shanghai me di cuenta de que el viaje había superado todas las expectativas. Sin duda éste ha sido uno de los mejores viajes que he hecho con estudiantes y permanecerá para siempre en mi memoria.
Como en ¨El Camino¨, lo que hace un viaje especial no es tanto lo que ves y lo que comes, sino la gente que te encuentras, y el tiempo que tienes para conocerte mejor a ti mismo y a los demás. Y compartiendo 10 días de nuestras vidas seguro que nos conocemos un poco más los unos a los otros.
Cindy, fue divertido ver la pareja que formabas con Shin Hee –parecíais hermanas- y como os juntábais con los dos juniors de mi clase de español. Enhorabuena por tus 100 kilómetros.
Doug, eres un tío valiente. Estando enfermo lo fácil habría sido llamar a Dani para que se acercara con la furgoneta y te llevara al hotel, pero sin embargo estando débil y con fiebre seguiste caminando. Demostraste una gran motivación y fuerza interior, y no pensaste en abandonar. Ja, ja, os gané tanto a Richard como a ti en el ¨Lanzamiento de Manzana¨. Por lo menos puedes decir que estabas enfermo. Técnica impresionante jugando al pañuelito.
Ethan, en las películas hay frases que quedan para la eternidad. Por ejemplo…
Pretty Woman:
- Llegas tarde.
- Estás impresionante.
- Estás perdonado.
No te metas con el Zohan
- ¿Qué eres, biónico?
- No, solo me gustan las mujeres.
Casablanca:
- ¿Dónde estuviste anoche?
- Eso fue hace mucho tiempo, no me acuerdo.
- ¿Te veré esta noche?
- Nunca hago planes con tanta anticipación.

Viaje a España, Camino de Santiago 2011
- Olga: ¡Te quiero!
- Ethan: Vale (con emoción = 0)
Antes de que vuelvas a España te tengo que enseñar dos o tres cosas.
Jessica: Tú te llevas el M.V.P. a la estudiante que trató de utilizar más el español, e interactuar más con el resto de estudiantes de Cantabria. Me encantaba que me preguntaras palabras de vocabulario, y que intentarás descubrir el significado de los platos en los menús. ¡Esa es la forma de aprender! Tanto Dani como yo quedamos muy impresionados con tu forma de correr jugando al pañuelito, ¡eres una atleta! Gracias por el diseño que enviaste, me gusta tanto como el diseño de Katie.
Jocelyn: Me hizo reir Gemma cuando me dijo que eres tan mona que le gustaría abrazarte cada vez que te ve :-) Es divertido siempre tenerte alrededor.
Joshua: El artista del grupo, con tus fotos y tus dibujos. Siento que a veces no tuviera ni idea de lo que decías, tengo algunas dificultades con tu acento… aunque suena muy bien :-) Me alegra de que no fueras al viaje de esquiar y te unieras a nuestro grupo
Katie: ¿Cómo te sientes viendo tu diseño en las sudaderas? Ahora los 23 jerseys están en España, así que son internacionales. ¡Mejores que Zara! :-) Gracias por tu trabajo.
Kevin: Tengo que hablar con Ethan –verdaderamente necesita un mentor- y también necesito hablar seriamente contigo. 21 españolas para 6 jovenes asiaticos -3.5 chicas por chico- ¿y no hiciste nada? ¿De verdad?
¡Estuvo guay verte hablar en español!
Kiah: Ja, ja, ¿cuántas veces tuve que oir eso de ¨pero esa chica de allá no es asiática, no?¨ :-) ¿Cómo se siente una siendo la ¨extraña¨ del grupo?
Marilyn: NO ME PUEDO CREER QUE RECHAZARAS MI ABRAZO CUANDO LLEGAMOS A SANTIAGO!!!! (Si hubiera sabido que ibas a hacer eso yo mismo te hubiera puesto pasta de dientes en el saco de dormir)
Michele: Me encanta tu sonrisa 24/7 :-) No la cambies, porque nos haces felices a los que estamos a tu alrededor.
Richard. Estoy muy contento de que los dos Wu-s se unieran al viaje. Intentaste con ganas interactuar con los españoles y apreciaron tus esfuerzos. Espero que después de este viaje te cambies de chino a español :-)
Robyn: ¡Tú eres muy valiente! Sé que el último día fue muy duro, pero nunca te quejaste… ¡y lo lograste! Me divertí andando contigo los últimos kilómetros… aunque me equivoqué de camino y os hice andar 500 metros más a Sharon y a ti! :-) Uppss!
Samantha: ¡Prueba conseguida! Puedes tachar ¨el Camino¨ de la lista de cosas que hay que hacer una vez en la vida. ¿Cuál es tu próximo proyecto? Atencion al viaje a España 2012
Sharon: Me divertí viajando contigo a Mongolia en otoño, y me he divertido en estas vacaciones de primavera. En los dos viajes hemos dormido en albergues… ¿cuándo nos tocan los hoteles de cinco estrellas?
Shin Hee, representando a Corea del Sur. Todavía no sé de quién es la cámara grande, si de Cindy o tuya, o las dos tenéis un ¨camarón¨. Pero de lo que si me he dado cuenta es de que te encanta sacar fotos, y que en un segundo puedes hacer 10 disparos :-) Me encanta el regalo que me hicisteis, la placa con ¨Javier´ y ¨El Camino¨.
Timothy: Parece que alguien ha encontrado a su media naranja durante el viaje. Ja, ja, me hizo gracia la cara de sorpresa que pusiste cuando te lo comente. ¡Era muy muy muy obvio!
Vicky: Las tres parecéis inseparables. Pero cuando Douglas se puso enfermo caminaste con él, eso fue un detalle. Me gustaría saber sobre qué hablábais las tres durante el camino…
Esther: La baby del grupo, la más joven en completar ¨El Camino¨. Es divertido tenerte cerca :-)
Ana: ¡Ah, qué pena! Me perdí uno de los momentos más emocionantes del viaje, el último día en la despedida en el hotel de los españoles. Bueno, lo que pasa en España se queda en España, ¿no?
Yvonne: No he podido tener una mejor compañera de aventuras en este viaje, ha sido genial ver como has disfrutado de cada momento en la vieja Europa :-) Especialmente disfruté de tu Día de Silencio :)
Me ha encantado viajar con vosotros. Habéis hecho nuevos amigos, y ahora a través de Facebook, Skype y otras herramientas vosotros sabéis mejor que nadie cómo seguir en contacto. El mundo es un pañuelo y un día alguno se volverá a encontrar con vuestros amigos españols. Espero que os hayáis dado cuenta de la importancia de aprender otra lengua para convertirse en ciudadanos del mundo.

Closing up the journal…
Before taking off this trip was very special for me for several reasons:
1.- I did ¨El Camino¨ before and it was one of the best experiences in my life.
2.- I would meet two friends –Ana and Carlos- that I hadn´t seen for 9 years, since we worked in South Carolina.
3.- I have taken students to Spain two times before, but this time definitely it would be more challenging.
Landing in Shanghai I realized that the trip overpassed all the expectactions, and without doubt this have been one of the best trips I have done with students, and it will stay forever in my memory.
Like ¨El Camino¨, what make a trip special is not what you see or what you eat, but the people you meet, and the time you have to know yourself and others better. And sharing 10 days of our lifes for sure we know each other a little bit :-)
Cindy, it was fun seeing you hanging out with Shin Hee –you looked like sisters- and the two juniors in my Spanish class. Congrats on your 100K!
Doug, you are really a brave man. Being sick it would had been easy to call Dani and get into the van to take you to the next hostel, but even weak and with fever you continued walking! You demonstrated a lot of strenght and stamina, and you never gave up! Ha, ha, I beat both you and Richard in the “Apple Throwing Contest”. At least you can say that you were sick .-) Impressive technique playing ¨pañuelito¨, the game with the piece of cloth in the middle.
Ethan, in movies there are sentences that pass to eternity. For instance…

Spanish trip, Camino de Santiago 2011
Olga: I love you!
Ethan: OK
Before you go back to Spain please let me teach you a couple of things or three!
Jessica: You get the M.V.P. trying to use Spanish and to interact with the rest of students from Cantabria. I loved it when you came asking vocab or questions about the menus. That´s the way to learn! Also, both Dani and I were really amazed with the way you run playing ¨pañuelito¨. Wow, you are an athlete! Thank for the design that you sent, I like it as much as Katie´s design.
Jocelyn: I laugh when Gemma told me that you are so cute that she would like to hug you everytime she sees you :-) You are a lot of fun girl!
Joshua: The artist of the group, with your pictures and drawings. Sorry sometimes I didn´t have a clue about what you were saying, I had some difficulties with your accent! It sounds really cool though! :-) I am glad you didn´t join the ski trip and came to Spain!
Katie: How did you feel seeing everybody with your design on our sweaters? Now the 23 jerseys are in Spain, so they went international. Better than Zara! :-) Thanks for your work doing that!
Kevin: I have to talk to Ethan –he really needs some coaching- and I also need to talk seriously with you. 21 Spanish girls for 6 Asian young men –one boy for every 3.5 girls- and you didn´t make any move? Really?

Kiah: Ha, ha, how many times I had to hear ¨but that girl over there is not Asian, right?¨ :-) How does it feel to be the ¨strange¨ one of the group?
Marilyn: I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT YOU REJECTED MY HUG WHEN WE ARRIVED SANTIAGO!!!! :( If I knew you would do that I would put more toothpaste on your sleeping bag myself! :-)
Michelle: I love your smile, 24/7! :-) Keep it always that way, and it makes everybody around you happy!
Richard: I am so glad that both Wu-s made the trip. You really made an effort to interact with the Spanish students, and they apreciated it. Hopefully this trip will make you change from Chinese into Spanish :-)
Robyn: You are so brave! I know that the last day was very tough, but you never complained… and we made it! It was fun walking with you those last kilometers… even though I missed the way and I made you and Sharon walk about 500 meters more! :-)
Samantha: Being there, done that! You scratch ¨El Camino¨ from the bucket list. What is the next big project? Keep tuned for Spanish Trip 2012!
Sharon: It was fun travelling with you to Mongolia in the fall, and fun traveling with you during the Spring break. In both trips we had to stay in hostels. When are we going to stay in 5 starts hotels? :-)
Shin Hee, representing South Korea! I still didn´t figure out if that big camera was yours, Cindy´s, or both of you have a good one. But what I realized is that you like to take pictures, as in one second you can make 10 shoots! :-) I love the present that you guys gave me, with ¨Javier¨ in ¨El Camino¨ tag.
Timothy: It looks like somebody found his sweetheart during the trip :-) Ha, ha, it was funny the surprise in your face when I made a comment. Come on, it was soooo obvious! :-)
Vicky: The three of you look unseparatable –if that is a word- during the trip. But then when Doug got sick you were there to walk with him, and that was nice! I wish I knew what you three girls were talking about during ¨El Camino¨
Esther: The baby of the group, the younger one completing ¨El Camino¨. You are a fun person to have around! :-)
Ann: Ah, what a pitty! I missed one of the most exciting moments of the trip, on the last day, at the hotel of the Spaniards :-) Well, what happen in Spain stays in Spain, right? :-)
Yvonne: I couldn´t have a better co-chaperone in this adventure. It has been great seeing you enjoying every single minute of your stay in the old Europe. I specially liked your ¨Day of silence¨ :-)
I loved travelling with you guys. You made a lot of new friends, and now with Skype, Facebook, and other tools that you know better than me is easy to be in touch. It is definitely a small world, and for sure some of you will meet again with the Spanish kids. I hope you realized about the importance of learning another language to become global citizens.
