My last day at Luanda International School Thanks a lot for everything!
Hoy viernes 5 de junio es nuestro último día del curso escolar 2019-20, y con ello mi último día como profesor en la Escuela Internacional de Luanda. Han sido dos años fantásticos en los que he conocido a gente maravillosa, un país con un potencial increíble y solo puedo estar agradecido. Por la pandemia del coronavirus el campus del colegio cerró el 18 de marzo. Desde ese día han sido 9 semanas y media de enseñanza a distancia. En condiciones normales hoy en el campus hubiera habido una ceremonia de despedida con fiesta posterior y los profesores que no volvemos hubiéramos tenido ocasión de decir unas palabras de despedida a nuestros compañeros. No puede ser así, por lo que para agradecer estos dos años he preparado este video con una canción de Jarabe de Palo que salió el 23 de mayo y me encanta. Esto es lo que digo en el video: ¨Sorry for the bad singing but, what can I do?, and I am leaving so no worries. I choose this song because it is from a very popular band, the name is Jarabe de Palo, it was released on May 23rd and pretty much it is saying ¨thank you¨, that is what I want to say in this video: thank you for two wonderful years at Luanda International School. I would like to say thank you individually to each of you but that would take forever so I am going to make it shorter. First, muchas gracias, thank you to the Language Acquisition Team, you ladies and gentleman are fantastic, you have a great sense of humour, lot of flexibility and I enjoyed and laughed a lot working with you. Also, thank you to the Y11 Team, we have been together for two years and I learned a lot from you and also I enjoyed working with that age group. Thank you to Admin, from Primary, Secondary, all the way to the top top because I always felt valued and very well supported. Thank you to the cleaners, to the drivers, to Dona María and the crew at Viva Café, thank you to the secretaries, thank you to everybody. Also thank you to my travel partner Annabelle because together we explored a lot of places in Angola and I love that country. And sure I am going to miss Angola, Luanda International School, you guys, but it is time to say ¨hasta la vista, baby¨. It is not a goodbye because I am pretty sure our paths will cross again but until then I wish you all the best y muchas gracias por todo.¨ ¨Ya siento cantar mal pero, ¿qué puedo hacer? Además me voy, así que no os preocupéis. Elijo esta canción porque es de un grupo muy popular que se llama Jarabe de Palo, salió el pasado 23 de mayo y básicamente dice ¨gracias¨, que es lo que quiero decir en este video: gracias por dos fantásticos años en la Escuela Internacional de Luanda. Me gustaría deciros gracias individualmente a cada uno de vosotros pero eso llevaría mucho tiempo y lo voy a hacer más corto. Primero, muchas gracias al Departamento de Adquisición de Lenguas. Señoritas y caballero, sois fantásticos, tenéis un gran sentido del humor, una gran flexibilidad y he disfrutado y me he reído mucho trabajando con vosotros. También, muchas gracias al Equipo de Año 11, hemos estado juntos estos dos años y he aprendido mucho de vosotros y disfrutado mucho con los chavales de esa edad. Gracias a la administración del colegio, de Primaria, Secundaria hasta arriba del todo porque siempre me he sentido valorado y muy apoyado. Gracias al personal de limpieza, a los conductores, a la Señora María y a su equipo en la cafetería, gracias a las secretarias… gracias a todo el mundo. También, gracias a mi compañera de viajes Annabelle porque juntos hemos explorado muchos lugares en Angola y me encanta ese país. Seguro que voy a echar de menos Angola, la Escuela Internacional de Luanda y a vosotros, pero es hora de decir ¨sayonara, baby¨. No es un adiós porque estoy bastante seguro de que nuestros caminos se volverán a cruzar, pero hasta entonces os deseo lo mejor y muchas gracias por todo¨. Esta es la sexta escuela y el quinto país en el que trabajo como profesor por lo que las despedidas no me son ajenas. Pero no por ello dejan de ser tristes. Me viene una vez más a la cabeza esta frase de Mirima Adeney: “You will never be completely at home again, because part of your heart always will be elsewhere. That is the price you pay for the richness of loving and knowing people in more than one place.” ¨Ya nunca volverás a estar completamente en casa. Porque parte de tu corazón siempre estará en algún otro sitio. Ese es el precio que tienes que pagar por la riqueza de querer y conocer a gente en más de un lugar¨. Sin duda una parte de mi corazón se ha quedado en Angola y voy a echar mucho de menos a gente extraordinaria que he conocido allá. Pero el deseo de conocer nuevos lugares y de experimentar nuevas cosas me puede y tomé en su día la decisión de cambiar de aires. En julio -si las cosas van bien con lo del coronavirus- volaré a mi nuevo destino, India, para enseñar en mi nueva escuela en Nueva Delhi. Una frase que le oí a Annabelle una vez fue ¨always leave a party when you're still having fun¨. Traducido, ¨vete siempre de una fiesta cuando todavía te lo estás pasando bien¨. No suele ser mi caso, cuando salgo suelo ser más de cerrar garitos. Pero en este caso sí que tengo la sensación de que me he ido de Luanda en un momento en el que la fiesta estaba guapa guapa. Pero hey, ¡nuevas aventuras nos aguardan! Una vez más, ¡muchas gracias a todos!
