SUNDAY, MARCH 22, 2026
I land at Melbourne airport at 5 a.m.

¡Mola Melbourne!
Return to the airport and flight to Nadi. Simple arrival procedures:
-I withdraw money with the Wise card from an ATM.
-I’m buying a SIM card.
-I’ll take a taxi to the Bulabard Hotel.
MONDAY, MARCH 23, 2026 – MONTE TOMANIIVI
Mount Tomaniivi is the highest mountain in Fiji, at 1,323 meters.
The climb starts from a village called Navai, at about 711m, and the ascent and descent total 10 kilometers.
It’s certainly not the typical Fijian activity, where everyone heads for the islands, but I fancied a bit of mountain hiking and seeing rural Fiji. I organized the trip through Peni. At six in the morning, Buli Tanani picked me up in a 4x4 and drove me to Navai. There, Junior guided me to the summit. They were both very friendly, and I learned a lot about local customs, which is what it’s all about.
I asked Junior how many people usually went up. He said about four hikes a month, with just a few people. That day we were the only ones on the mountain.
The mountain was quite muddy, and it was cloudy at the summit, so I couldn’t see the views of the island. But it was worth it. After descending, we ate in Navai at Buli Tanani’s house and then returned to Nadi. A full day!
TUESDAY, MARCH 24, 2026 – FIJI CULTURAL VILLAGE
That day I booked a tour to visit Fiji Cultural Village , where they explain the ancestral customs of the country’s inhabitants. The visit was in the morning, and we had lunch there. On the way back, I stopped in the center of Nadi to see the Hindu temple and experience Fiji’s third-largest city. In the afternoon, I didn’t overdo it: I took a nap—my body was craving it—and then went for a leisurely stroll along the hotel beach, watching the sunset.
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25, 2026 – SNORKELING WITH SHARKS
Yes, that day I did what you have to do when you go to Fiji: travel to one of the islands. I booked this tour with South Sea Cruises and went from Port Denarau to Barefoot Kuata Resort to snorkel with sharks. It was really cool—the boat trip, the islands, the snorkeling… Fiji’s reputation is well-deserved!
Back in Port Denarau I went to the hotel, picked up my backpack and headed straight to the airport to fly to Singapore.
THURSDAY, MARCH 26, 2026 – SINGAPORE – JOHOR BAHRU – KUALA LUMPUR
I crossed the border from Singapore to Malaysia by bus, explored Johor Bahru, Malaysia’s second-largest city, and returned to Kuala Lumpur by train. I write about it on my blog .
-----------------------------------------
It was a short trip, but I got a lot out of it and I’m coming back delighted with the hospitality of the Fijians, such lovely people. They’re constantly greeting you with " Bula! " and " Vinaka " (=thank you) is a word you also learn right away.
Rugby sevens, now that Spain is strong, has been one of the regular topics of conversation with the locals.
